The Armor of God

Dee: Do you believe there is a hell? Do you believe Satan exists? What about demons?

Most gracious heavenly Father, we praise you and thank you for your Holy Word which proclaims all truths. We ask, Lord, for the power of your Holy Spirit to transcend these radio waves, to open our eyes and our hearts to the devastating wiles of the enemy Satan and his demons. We thank you, Lord, for the power you give us over the enemy, through the shed blood of Jesus, our Savior. In Jesus precious name, we pray. Amen.

Harv: Hell, as a place of future punishment, is distinctly taught in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments.

John: 2 Peter, chapter 2 makes it pretty clear. I'll read a little, beginning with verse 4. "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them into hell putting them in gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment, if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness...if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes...and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man...then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment while continuing their punishment."

Dee: It's true that God is loving and merciful. He doesn't want anyone to go to hell. That's why he provided a way of escape for each and every one of us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Jesus willingly died on the cross, giving his life as a sacrifice for all who come to God through him.

Harv: Satan tempted Jesus during his 40 day fast in the wilderness. The power of God is the greatest power. Then as now, Jesus reigns victorious.

John: Some of the other names given in the Bible for Satan are 'adversary', 'false accuser', 'Belzebub', 'the devil' and 'serpent'.

Dee: In Matthew 12 (KJV) Satan is spoken of as the prince of devils. New translations oftentimes use the term 'demons'. The scriptures also call them evil spirits and tell us that they sometimes invade the minds of people.

John: Like the man from Godarrah who was a maniac until Jesus cast legions of demons out of him. They went into the swine nearby. The man then came into his right mind. The swine, then being possessed of the demons, went into the sea and drowned. All 2,000 of them.

Harv: Devils or demons can influence our thinking. Listen to James 3:14-17. "If you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.

Dee: We have a powerful enemy, but our God is greater.

Harv: Amen.

John: Victory is ours through Jesus.

Dee: From the fourth chapter of James, we read "submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you."

Harv: Try to visualize this verbal picture I'm going to describe. Ephesians 6:11 says, "Put on the whole armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."

John: Here I stand, a Christian soldier ready to move upward and onward for God as soon as I get my armor on.

Harv: "Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist."

John: I have learned God's truths and I have wrapped them around me and buckled them securely in place. I stand firm in these truths.

Harv: "With the breastplate of righteousness in place."

John: I have asked Christ into my heart and through Jesus, I stand righteous before God. I hear his voice and obey him, striving always to become more Christlike.

Harv: "With your feet fitted with the readiness that comes with the gospel of peace."

John: Every time I study and read God's Word and memorize scripture, my feet become better shod and I am better prepared to take the gospel of peace to others.

Harv: Now, "Take up the shield of faith"

John: Sometimes my shield is hot and heavy from all of Satan's fiery darts, but by trusting God, reading His Word, praising and praying, He holds my shield of faith in place.

Harv: "Take the helmet of salvation."

John: My helmet of salvation is the most glorious Easter bonnet of all. Through Christ's resurrection, he has provided eternal life for me and for all who come to God through him.

Harv: Now take "the sword of the spirit which is the Word of God".

John: I carry my sword and as a Christian soldier, I use the Word of God in a Christlike, loving way that others may be helped.

Harv: "Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."

John: My lips are covered with prayers. I am conscious of my God with me at all times. I talk to him in praises and with requests for myself and for others. I ask him to direct my path. I am covered from head to foot with the armor of God.

Dee: From the 20th chapter of Exodus, we read "You shall have no other God before me, for I, the Lord your God am a jealous god."

John: As a Christian soldier, it behooves me to be aware of false gods and idol worship that the enemy of my soul might try to snare me with.

Harv: We may be tempted to worship our material wealth such as our home, our car, our clothes or jewelry. First Timothy 6:10 says, "the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith."

Dee: The idols we worship may be movie stars, rock stars, the scenarios on the TV such as soap operas.

Harv: Some other false gods that we might worship are liquor, drugs, astrology or cults.

John: As a Christian soldier, I've been alerted to recognize the devil and his snares and I resist them as I'm instructed to do by the Bible. "Submit yourselves then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

Dee: Christian soldier...

John: Yes?

Dee: Are you afraid of Satan and his evil spirits?

John: I have respect for his cunningness and his power but since I've put on the armor of God and I look to my savior for all things, I don't need to fear. Philippians 4:13 says it well. "I can do everything through him (Christ) who gives me strength."

You see, God lives in me. Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.

Dee: Amen.
