Lecture: Mandate -- Evangelize
"Witnessing is sharing Christ through God's Word and/or our testimony and leaving the results to God."
There is no failure in witnessing -- the response is up to the prospect.
I: Jesus -- our model evangelist
A. Mark 1:16, 17 "make you fishers of men" (Math 4:19)
Math 28:19,20 "teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" (We need to learn what He commanded.)
Thus Jesus began and ended His ministry directing us to be fishers of men and to teach men to observe what He has commanded
B. His ministry of only three years reached millions
1. He spent most of his time teaching and training 12 disciples
2. He was their example in all things
3. He took them with him to observe and learn
4. Jesus also felt discouraged at times
5. Even he was unjustly accused and criticized at times
Remembering that Jesus spent most of his time training 12 men, consider how many have been won to Christianity.
If you won and trained one disciple every six months, and each disciple you trained did likewise, it would only take 18 years o win the world to Christ! Training converts to win others is called discipling.
II: The Bible -- our master textbook
A. Titus 2:13-15 "These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority"
1. Use God's word for your authority: Ex. "God says", "the Bible says", "in God's Word we read", etc.
2. Don't say "I believe", "I think", "I understand", etc.
B. First Century Church
1. Laymen as well as ministers involved: Acts 8:3,4 "Saul...made havoc of the church, entering into every house and haling men and women...therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word";
2 Tim 2:2 "And these things thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also";
1 Peter 3:15 "be ready to give an answer to every man";
1 Peter 4:10 "As every man has received the gift, even so minister the same to another, as good stewards"
2. Converts were nurtured and instructed: Acts 2:47 Converts were guided into the church; the Epistles were follow up of converts
3. Power to witness: Acts 1:8 "Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me"; One cannot successfully witness for Christ unless he is free from sin. Each of us
must examine our own lives. See if there is any sin in our life. If so, it must be confessed to God. Ask for forgiveness and the power not to sin again.
Luke 11:13 "how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him"; We must be filled with the Holy Spirit to win souls effectively to Christ.
