Witnessing Made Easy for the Layman

Session 3: Personal Testimony

Prayer
For those on whom we've already called, to grow
To prepare the hearts of those to be called on today
That God will direct us to whomever He would have us visit
That the Lord will help us learn
That the Holy Spirit will direct in all that's said and done

Review
Recite together: Eph. 2:8,9; Acts 8:20; Titus 3:5
Discuss practice sessions outside of class with the "Good News" booklet

Lecture: Personal Testimony
Your personal testimony should never be more than 3 minutes. The contents can vary from time to time depending on the needs of the hour and to testify of recent answers to prayer. One should not be repeitious when testifying to the same person or group of person.
The testimony you are being asked to prepare at this time is the story of your conversion to Christianity. It should relate the 3 subjects on the chart below.

In Three Minutes or Less

I. What I was before I became a Christian

II. How I became a Christian

III. What Jesus has meant in my life

I. Be Positive
Don't say things that would discourage your prospect
Jesus offers: eternal life, forgiveness, new outlook on life, fellowship, friends, love, purpose for living, peace of mind, etc.

II. Be Specific
Tell of peace and excitement in Christ
Tell what Jesus does for you

III. Identify with the prospect
Give a testimony they can relate to. Something in your life that they can see themselves in.

IV. Avoid:
Giving away answers to questions you will ask later
Generalities and Travelogue
Being frivolous toward the gospel
Cliches that are meaningless to the non-Christian, ie blessing, Christian, saved, conversion, Hallelujah, born again, receive Christ, etc.

V. Do:
Use humor constructively
Use direct or indirect quotes
Speak pictorially

Assignment
Write your testimony
Memorize John 3:16 and Romans 5:8

Mock Presentation
Practice in pairs using "Good News" booklet
Be easy prospects for your partner. Learning how to handle objections will come later.

Prayer
on whom to call, prepare their hearts, direct us with them
