Lecture: Instructing the New Convert
You instructions to the new Christian are vital. I recommend that you give him at this time a copy of the book of John. If he is not of church background he may find it impossible
to understand the King James Version. So a translation into American English, as we speak it today, may be expedient. As he grows in the Lord. you can help him in the use of a concordance, etc. The American Bible Society is a good source for inexpensive scriptures, including the book of John.
A. Christ told us to "search the scriptures" John 5:39. We should memorize (Ps. 119:11) "Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee."
B. We are told to pray without ceasing 1 Thes. 5:17. Talk to God about everything that concerns you. Don't forget to thank Him for your blessings: health, food, clothes, loved ones, etc. The more
you pray, the happier you will be in your new life.
C.Worship with Christians (Heb. 10:25). You may think you are strong enough to stand alone, and this is the downfall of many. You need the strength and guidance of the church, and the other Christians in the church will be encouraged by your new life in Christ.
D. Tell others about Christ (2 Tim. 2:2). Math. 10:33 tells us that if we deny Christ before men, He will deny us.
E. Read and pray for strength because the devil wants you back. He will try you at your weakest point. God won't allow you to be tempted more than you are able to stand. 1 Cor. 10:13
Your work as a spiritual parent has just begun. The new Christian is just a "babe in Christ" who needs much love, patience and direction from you. He will look to your
life as an example and it must be exemplery. Many phone calls and visits to him will be necessary before he has matured in Christ.
After he has had time to read John, make sure he has a Bible and understands how to find the books, chapters and verses.
The five previous instructions should be expounded. Give him further scriptures on these subjects. Help him to find scriptures relating to his personal problems. You may choose to give him a Bible course planned to help his spiritual growth.
Once he is very aware of the 5 points, help him to find scriptures on obedience to Christ. Encourage him to be baptized. You job is not complete until he is a mature Christian and is reaching and training others for Christ.
As in witnessing, don't feel obliged to follow absolutely a set pattern. Lean on the Holy Spirit to help you minister according to the needs of each individual.
Don't allow the devil to discourage you through apparent failure. Remember the parable of the sower. Just be confident that you have planted and watered asa the Lord has directed you. When a Christian's spirits dip, it is a good practice to rebuke the devil in Jesus' name and by His precious blood, and ask the Lord to give you the peace and joy that passes all understanding.
